-- Olivebean, you and me need to talk, young lady. You keep me awake way, way too much, pawing at my door and crying your mournful cry. I get that I'm Your Person, and my sole purpose in life is to provide a safe and willing lap upon which you may nap. But I need to sleep, honestly. A sleep that does not involve you walking all over my face and licking me in that adorable, yet slightly ADD-esque way that you have. Anyway, let me sleep, or I become the cranky momma who cusses too much. Also, stop being so damn jealous of my laptop.

-- Nox, the walls are not going to answer you, no matter how many times you "Hewwwwooooooo?" them.

-- Ants. So. Yes. With the weather warming, it's our first spring in the apartment, and there is an anthill right out back. Those ants invaded the kitchen full force on Saturday. I can't seem to find their trail, but I went on the offensive, cleaning out the cabinet that was drawing them (cereal, natch) and putting one ant bait thing in thee where the cats can't get to it. I swabbed down the sinks with a lemon and orange EO wash, which has been really helpful in getting rid of the scent trail they leave behind, so mostly it's been scout ants since then, not a full infestation. Salt did pretty much NADA. But I'm still seeing a few ants every time I go into the kitchen, and it is DRIVING ME BONKERS. I also poured a couple of pots of boiling water directly into the anthill, so hopefully that will help some, too. DIE, LITTLE BASTARDS.

-- PO run today. Getting all of last week's orders out.

-- I've been watching this show on Netflix called Jeremiah. Circa 2002, post-apocalyptic drama starring Luke Perry & Malcolm Jamal Warner. In any case, it is surprisingly good! Although to be honest, I would be way happier if it were called Hijinks and Tomfoolery with Kurdy, Theo, and Occasionally Mr. Smith. Because Jeremiah isn't really so much a rounded character on his own so much as he is an archetype or a trope. Not hating on Luke Perry; the character just isn't given much in terms of emotional maturation. He's just the Stoic Hero Guy. Kurdy, on the other hand, broke out of the "hey, I am not your black sidekick guy!" mold fairly early on, and has a complicated but very active inner life of his own which is infinitely more interesting than Jeremiah's. And Theo is probably one of the most amusing villains I've seen on the TV screen. She's sort of Spike-esque, minus the neutering. So, the show, it is pretty okay for a show that came out in the early 2000's. (Also: hello Vancouver acting pool and a boatload of BSG alums!)

-- Next up, Stargate: Universe, which [livejournal.com profile] zenmaster sent me.

I had ants last summer in the upstairs bathroom (nowhere else, how odd is that). My guess is they were after water because it was mostly around the shower or sink. I mixed some borax and sugar and laid it out on the windowsill near the shower. I think they were gone in about 2 weeks.

I get the little creepers every spring. I find it helps a bit to spread diatomaceous earth around the foundation (a non-chemical means of keeping them out) but mostly it's just a matter of cleaning. A friend of mine swears by mint oil, but I usually end up resorting to nasti chemicals by the summer.

Of course, the worst it that the little creeps keep trying to set up colonies in my plant pots. At least once a year I'll water my plants and have an entire ant colony coming boiling out of the soil. Then I have to drown the plant in the bathtub and slaughter the retreating army.

I'm almost out of lemon & orange EOs... I am gonna switch to mint next.

We successfully fended off a huge invasion in our previous house using vinegar solution on all the possible entryways and all down the main wall through which they were coming.

Ahhh, cats. They can be annoying, but in a cute sort of way. :)

(this from a non-owner, but lover of, cats.)

So I'm guessing from the stuff you are using you are trying to stay natural. If you are not here is some great stuff a friend of mine told me about when we had our first invasion of ants at the new house and all the normal methods didn't help:

Spectracide Ant Shield. We get ours at Home Depot. Works GREAT!

Ah yes, Jeremiah. I remember it well. In fact, I just got the second season on DVD; it's finally been released after all this time. I'd be interested to hear your reaction to season 2, episode 8 ("Crossing Jordan").

Also, SG:U returns with new episodes this Friday!

we have a terrible ant problem, but wanted something environmentally, food prep and cat friendly. (ants are in the kitchen mostly).

our neighbors recommended an electronic repellant and we were skeptical. We ordered one from Ace Hardware for $40. less than 48 hours later- the ants were gone. The noise doesn't bother the cats, is only slightly annoying to my bat ears.

it has multiple settings for different insects, but we use it just for the ants. we keep it on 24hrs/day. We've seen the occasional scouting party, but they leave quickly. This year, we're thinking about getting one for the upstairs bathroom- our other ant hotspot.

Ants also hate cinnamon with the passion of a thousand angry nuns, so if cinnamon is kitty safe it might be worth trying cinnamon on the entry point(s).

when I lived there, you could ask maintenance to have an exterminator come out for free. Just be sure you mention you have cats and need something animal safe.

Oh, God, your Nox does that too? My Miette does this quite often. Especially late at night.

Huh. I have never seen Jeremiah though I've considered watching it in the past. I am just curious now because I used to roleplay with a Theo in [livejournal.com profile] theatrical_muse and I don't remember ever thinking they were supposed to be a villain (or Spike-esque, for that matter). I now wonder if that was characterization!fail on the writer's part (I remember them as being a good writer. Hrm.) or if she's more an anti-hero?

She was introduced as a villain, but as things progress, her character develops into more of a leadership role.

I get this stuff at the hardware store called Terro, it's borax in a sugar solution. I put out a little pool of it and the ants flock to it. Do that for a few days and they stop showing up at all. Reapply any time you see a new invasion. Also much kitty healthier than other alternatives.
