I had a fantastic weekend. I got out of my pajamas exactly twice: once to go to bellydance class, and once to take a bath. I spent nearly the whole time relaxing and working on jewelry. I made a lot. A lot. I have calluses all over my right hand. And I have a ton of supplies on their way to my house. I'll probably update my Etsy shop in two weeks, and I'll have 30 to 40 pieces for sale.
I've been playing around with asymmetry, rebelling against my Virgoan nature. I'm also trying out chain looks instead of continuous bead strands. I bought a big lot of mixed vintage brass and oxidized bits to play with. I'm trying out different styles to see how I like them. I had a thought about a comment I got in my suggestions post about steampunk. And steampunk has never really been my style, mostly 'cause though I love the anachronistic Victorian aesthetic, a) I can't afford those gorgeous gowns and b) where would I wear 'em even if I could? But I was thinking about how I might incorporate the aesthetic into jewelry and came up with an idea. The hard part is putting my own spin on it. I've been limiting my exposure to what others have done with steampunk jewelry because I don't want to copy anyone else's work unintentionally. As of right now, I've really only seen a piece or two on Etsy and the "Alchemy of Time" series over at Wyrding Studios (which is gorgeous, by the way, and I want to snag a pair of Kythryne's earrings). At any rate, I'm going to buy supplies for my idea on Thursday and see where it goes. Aside from that, money from the next month's jewelry sales are going to go towards my acquisition of chalcedony briolettes. They're so gorgeous and ethereal, but also very spendy. As I was walking home on Friday, I saw the sun setting and was struck with an idea for a lariat necklace, but it's going to be awhile before I can afford the components. Gah. At any rate, my brain is already craving the colors of spring, and it's being reflected in the things I create.
Aside from my blitzkrieg of art, I finished up season 1 of Rome and completed my rewatch of Buffy season 3. I'm going to go on record and say that s3 is my favorite. It doesn't have the highest number of my favorite episodes, but as a whole, the arcs are well-written and emotionally poignant, there's some excellent character development, and not a lot of filler eps. Plus, evil!Faith. S3 wins, hands-down. Anyway, next on my Netflix list is The Tudors, so woot for period drama. I also took the most fantastic bath on Sunday. Fantasy Bath's Snow Wonder + Blackberry Brew = milky lavender water and heavenly fresh apple and berry scent. I can still smell it in my hair. Mmmm.
In other news, I took my first class with Lyra of Kallisti Tribal. It's a mixed I/II class, and I'm excited to really hammer in the basics. The thing about any form of dance is that the hardest things are invariably called "basics." Posture. Hand floreos. Arm placement. Taxim. Shimmies. I learned some things "wrong" from my first teachers-- I say wrong because they look fine, but were modified from the original movements. And if I want to be a competent and knowledgeable dancer, I need to learn the "correct" way to dance before I use modifications. So I'm looking forward to the class as a chance to focus on the miniscule and really cement my basics. This is something that I'll probably do from time to time throughout my dancing life. It has a meditative quality. It cements, for me, why I dance. That said, some of the women with absolutely no dance experience in the class were really wonderful! Tribal posture is not an easy thing to wrap your brain around, and these ladies got a great start. It looks like it's going to be a warm, receptive class, and Aura studio (in Fell's Point) is just a wonderfully pure place to learn. Excited.
Also, my Black Phoenix yoga pants came in. I never want to take them off, ever. They're that comfy. And they make my ass look fantastic. I forsee another pair in my future. All in all-- great weekend. I danced, I created, I ate good food, I drank good tea, I fell asleep on the couch, I slept in. Wonderfully restorative. Need another one soon. In the meanwhile, the weather's been absolutely gorgeous today, and I'm going to enjoy the walk home.
