So, the US House of Representatives just voted to bar Planned Parenthood from federal funding. PP was already barred from using federal funds to perform abortions, but now the people who use the service for birth control, STD screenings (including HIV), cancer screenings, etc. are also shit out of luck. And by people, I predominantly mean women who are sexually active and making choices about their bodies.

As [livejournal.com profile] roaming pointed out, to make this EVEN MORE HORRIFIC, that SAME HOUSE just voted to let the Pentagon use federal funding for NASCAR SPONSORSHIP.

You read that right.

NASCAR is an appropriate use of our tax dollars, but life-saving healthcare for women is not.

The Senate still has to vote, but JESUS FUCKING CHRIST. There is a war on women happening in Congress right now, and anyone who denies it is not living in our fucking Earth reality. THOSE SHITTY MOTHERFUCKERS. I really, really wish I could just leave this goddamn country sometimes-- I am that fucking fed up.

It is so absolutely disgusting that I too have considered leaving this neanderthal-run country. Problem is where the hell would I go? Maze is disabled- try getting a visa with that. Yeah, no. So, I went to PP and signed my name on the letter they're sending to Congress.

And I take small comfort in the fact that Senate will never pass this piece of shit legislation. The fact that these godamned assholes are wasting time on it at all still makes my blood boil.

Its all part of a grand plan to chip away at reproductive rights until Roe Vs Wade means NOTHING.

Yep. Let's make women wait three months! Let's make them watch a sonogram of their unborn fetus! Let's make them get counseling! Soon you will need a letter from the fucking Pope to get an abortion.

The other layer of stupid that gets me is... "The Navy and Marine Corps dropped their NASCAR sponsorships in recent years, saying they didn't know whether they worked."

Because when you don't know if an ad campaign yielded results, the best possible thing to do is throw more money at it.

It's not just the NASCAR bullpucky. They also voted to give contraceptives to WILD HORSES. Apparently in Republican World, HORSES > HUMAN WOMEN.

I agree, if this asshattery passes the Senate and we lose more rights, I too have been seriously thinking about where the heck could we go? I do not want to live in a country where my body is not my own and I am viewed as a second class citizen (first as a woman, and then as an invisible UNICORN as a BISEXUAL woman)

This is the state of the House of Representatives. Call your reps to thank them, they are certainly getting blasted by the other side.

Call your senators. Tell them to hold fast. Or tell them that you hate their woman-hating guts and you look forward to contributing money to their opponent. Depending on which way they swing.

This isn't the big scare. The big scare is when it comes time to raise debt funding limits. That's when there will be a lot of back room dealing to keep the government running. Your Senators (cause the House is fucked) need to know you'd rather have the government shut down than have this sort of thing passed.

This isn't the big scare.

I beg to differ. They've been attempting to whittle away at Roe V Wade and having lots of minor victories, and DUDE, I AM SCARED. As you, know, I should be.

But yes, by now I'm pretty sure my reps/senators know me by name, I've written them often enough.

The reason why I'm more blase is that this is the House. It doesn't matter what the House does. It is going to be the Republican Right Wing Agenda all the time. That's how the House is structure (which I'm sure you know, but I like to backfill for the viewing audience in case they DON'T have their Senators and Representatives on speed dial). Unfortunately, chipping away at Roe v Wade, chipping away at worker rights, chipping away at allowing us to live free, breath cleanish air, and drink cleanish water is what they are going to do. To engage your rage here, at them, is next to pointless. This is what they said they were going to do, and it is what they are going to do, and there are no stunts that can stop it, or even slow it down in the House.

The Senate is where this legislation is going to die. And die it will unless I've horribly misread the Senate. Of course, the kicker will be when there's time to horse trade to prevent the gov't shut down. That's when I fear for the funding. That's why I'm saying to call your Senator if they are at all sympathetic and tell them to hold the line and shut the government down rather than make a deal on this. Tell them that you'll support them.

It may not work, because we've got enough Centrist Democrats who would have been Republicans 30 years ago, but it is what we've got to affect the process usefully.

It's not worthless to get angry that they're trying to pass bullshit legislation in the first place. It's heartening that it's not LIKELY to pass, of course, but that doesn't make it any less offensive that it was proposed at all. Like it or not, it shows where over half of our elected lawmakers' priorities lie.

*fuming with you*

You know, I'm a longtime patient of Planned Parenthood. There's this bizarre idea that they kill babies and rip apart the American family or something. What are they teaching in churches?? My experience over fifteen years, though, is that they encouraged my having a (planned) pregnancy and they fucking provided me with the only medical care I could afford when I was living for years without any viable insurance options. All this time and not a single abortion. What I got was cancer screenings, blood pressure checks, health advice and affordable medication for prices I could afford to pay. Bunch of bloodthirsty healthcare professionals, huh?

Believe it or not, the Lutheran & Episcopal churches back Planned Parenthood.

What are they teaching in churches Fox News shows??

I guess I just can't quite figure out how some people have such a completely different vision of reality than I do. Like the fight over gay marriage. Who are the people contesting equal rights? Because, I don't know a single one of them. So there must be pockets of backwards fuckery going on outside of my liberal bubble of sanity.

Most of my family opposes legal abortion, Planned Parenthood, gay marriage etc. etc. on down the line. These people exist. But it's more complicated than I think a lot of people realize. My grandmother, the family matriarch, is a college professor who would never push her beliefs on her students (except via the ballot box). If you met her and never discussed religion, politics, or sexuality with her (and who would, with an old lady they barely knew?) you would walk away with the impression that she was one of the kindest, most self-sacrificing, generous people you've ever met.

And she is. She also has some seriously illogical and sometimes downright hateful views that are in complete contrast to everything else she stands for.

You probably know people like her and don't even know it. They are all over. They are brainwashed and misguided, and I pity them. Unfortunately, they have just as much a legal right to vote as the rest of us :(

This is really frakking scary. I don't have health insurance. Planned Parenthood is the only place I can afford to get check-ups. They are often the sole place women can get affordable help for their reproductive health in many counties in many states.

I keep meaning to re-read "The Handmaid's Tale" but I'm scared. I've never in my life been afraid to read a book until now.
