A farewell to my dear friend, my very favorite hiking pants.

You, who were bought sometime around my sophomore year of college. You have seen me through hiking in feet of snow, in deserts, down to the basin of the Grand Canyon and back up. You who have floated down the C&O, hung out around campfires, braved the waterslides at Kings Dominion, and seen the tops of many mountains.

You were warmer than you seemed and dried with an almost magical quickness.

You outlasted two long term relationships. I was wearing you the day I got engaged.

You were a good pair of pants, and I will miss you.

I don't know why, but whenever I read that phrase, I am reminded of "AMOK AMOK AMOK!" from Hocus Pocus.

Are they completely unsalvageable? Or is there a chance you might be able to pick them apart for a pattern? Finding a good match for the fabric might be a challenge, but for a truly good pair of pants, it might be worth it.

The back end completely blew out of them. They were Old Navy, and there are similar styles still in production.

Well that's good. I think I might have a pair, if it's the style I'm thinking of. Mine are capri length, though, but the fabric is great and the pockets are all at just the right height/size.

Yep. These were also capris with the option to unbutton and roll down to full length.

Huh... I wonder if mine do that. There's enough fabric down there.

Is it sad that I haven't bothered to figure that out before now? I think I'm too used to rolled cuff capris that are stitched into place.

Wow, you've had those pants longer than I've known you. That was a long-lived pair of pants!

Now what will you hike in?

If you haven't sent them into the abyss yet, perhaps you can use them to make something else? Like a pouch or something.

I wish I'd have thought of that before I abyssed them.

Although I know your grief is sincere - this entry made me smile :D I am sorry you have lost a most favorite pair of pants. I still miss my most favorite lightening bolt t-shirt. I wish I had bought 3 or 4 of those.
