Inspiration: Film Noir
Dec. 30th, 2011 09:38 pmHello, denizens of livejournal. Thank my various Gods it's Friday. It's Friday, and I have spiced wine.
I have to tell you, I failed miserably at pin curls. It was bad. I basically looked like I had a clown wig on. Probably because I used the wrong kind of brush-- I used a natural bristle round instead of a wire brush, and as a result, I looked like I stuck my finger in a light socket. No bueno. Backup plan: attempt Victory Rolls.
The reason for the sudden experimentation with the hair is that I'm going to a film noir-themed New Year's Eve party. I already have the perfect dress (red close-cut wiggle dress from Pin Up Girl Clothing). As an impulse buy, I also finally picked up a pair of red heels to match it. I have been saying how much I want a pair of red heels for something like three years now, and I found a pair of faux-sueded red platform pumps on clearance for $20! They are verrrrry sexy. 4 1/2" heel. Total vixen glam.
I sort of wish I had thought far enough ahead to pick out a hair fascinator/hat with black netting to cover my eyes in true film noir fashion, but as it stands, a crimson lily in my hair will have to do. Red nails, red lips, red red red. And red hair, as my roots have been freshly redone in a rich ginger shade that I like a little better than the burgundy/auburn I had previously.
I'm going to be following this authentic makeup tutorial, with the addition of a bit of a smoky eye for evening. I always feel a bit nervous about a bold red lip when I'm not onstage-- my eyes are so large that I always feel a tad clownish when I wear red lips. Or lipstick/gloss in general, really. But we shall see-- it's all part of the look.
I think, in general, I would like to get more 40's and 50's inspired dresses. I've never been a big clothes horse, in part because clothes that are tailored-looking tend to be ridiculously expensive, so the options for an hourglass figure nowadays are a) squeeze yourself into hipster clothes that make you look like a sausage or b) mom jeans. But I think I could totally rock a retro look if I put in a little more effort. Also, helloooooo. (Can I say how much I love that this site gives you the models' measurements and has models with a wide variety of body types? With the exception of her height, this model and I have the same measurements, so I already know that anything she's wearing will look awesome on me.) And also in the realm of retail window shopping, this dress is also quite swoonworthy, no?
Anywho-- happy new year, everyone. I'll post some pics to let you know how the noir look turned out!

Date: 2011-12-31 03:08 am (UTC)Are you familiar with the character Joan Harris, from Mad Men? You could use her as a basis for your exploration of that era's fashions.
Here's a picture.

Date: 2011-12-31 03:13 am (UTC)Anyhow, I think you'd look stunning in any of Joan's dresses from Mad Men. The one I linked to would be especially fetching, though pretty much anything out of her wardrobe would work for you.

Date: 2011-12-31 03:13 am (UTC)I've thought about getting one of the full-torso girdle-y jobbies that also incorporates a bra, for the full vintage effect. They're 'spensive, though.

Date: 2011-12-31 06:29 pm (UTC)I know and love the site you got it from so, how dd the shipping work out? How long did it take to get the dress and, are they 'true to size?' If ordered, would I need any alterations?
I'm 5'3 and a high-waisted hour-glass so that site would work for my much-loved pencil-skirt retro vibe, right?
Also, wish I saw that tutorial before I did my NYE make-up!
