Good morning, world.

I'm continually astounded by the No Pity, No Shame, No Silence discussions that have been going around. When you hear the statistic that one in four women will be sexually assaulted or raped in her lifetime, it's so easy to get overwhelmed and ignore it. It's a completely different thing when you find out just how many of your friends and aquaintances it has happened to. As for me, I have been lucky enough never to have been the victim of sexual violence. This has not been the case for many of my friends-- I'd say 25% is a pretty accurate fit, and it does not just stop at women.

You deserve the right not to be scared, and not to be shamed. You deserve highest respect above all because you survived something incredibly traumatic. It might have shaped you or scarred you, but it didn't end you. You fought back. And I respect you for it.

I was mildy shocked as well seeing the confessions in my lj friends as well.

I might not been rape, but I have molested by a family member-repetively. I don't see myself as a survivor or a victim. I am wiser and stronger because of it and that is what I see my friends as also.

I've been steadily horrified at the number of women I've known over the years who have that in their background. It's frightening, makes me ashamed to be a guy sometimes. :(

Thanks Chris. That made me smile/cry. And yes, it is VERY true!

This is something that really angers me. Sexual abuse is such a horrible, horrible thing. Sex for me is something that is very special and wonderful, and to have that part of one's self violated in such an ugly, vicious way is beyond what I can bear to think about.

Of the 4 women I've been very close to, 3 have had some form of abuse ranging from full rape at a young age to being taken advantage of while drunk/asleep.

As a martial artist and someone who has taught martial arts, I would highly recommend that all women either take up some form of martial art or take enough self defense courses that they will be able to adequetely defend themselves if something happens.

And for those who have had to endure such hell, you have my deepest admiration and respect.
