I got to sleep in until 8:30. Paradise, people. Today, we havet the ethical discussion, and Behind Closed Doors I, which is a simulator for the newbie RAs with all the returners as actors. We actually do this twice. Round I is all very light stuff: parties, an alcohol violation, roommate disputes, etc. After the newbies have had time to process more info and learn from the first round, the returning RAs and Peer Mentors do BCDII. Situations generally include a larger party, drug violations, alcohol poisoning... I was suicide girl last year.

Being suicide girl was a tough act to follow, as a friend of mine had usually filled the role, and she's a theater chick who practically had us all in tears my first year. I surprised myself last year, and severely shook up a newbie or two on my own. They didn't do terribly well, though. If one more person told me that God loved me and didn't want me to die, I was going to start screaming. It's never ok for an RA to bring religion into a matter or assume a religion of a resident. And aside from the talking the resident down, there is strict protocol the RA must follow with regards to getting a counselor and on call ResLife coordinator on the spot immediately. This is a process that an RA has to have down cold, because if you don't, "Oh, she's just upset" can and will turn into a graveside scenario.

In good news, I bought myself the most gorgeous roses last night. I have to take pictures of them tonight. They're a rich cream color with delicate pinkish tips. I don't usually get roses, but these are exceptionally beautiful. I like flowers.

Also, it's Racheal's birthday. We still don't know what's up for celebrating. I can only afford one outing this weekend-- that means wither dinner tonight or going out this weekend. RA training means I can't work at the bookstore means no paycheck for three weeks. This really and honestly irks me when a member of our team gets to leave for football practice, but anyway. She had a shot at midnight, then sipped some mango rum & oj.

Shower time, food, busy day begins.

PS - since it is 8:45 am EST - YAY Paul Hamm! Best comeback ever!

The RA role playing exercises were always my fav part of training. (Worst was ice breakers, which I hate to this very day.) One year a friend of mine and I got to be roommates having a fight. Too much fun getting into a nasty screaming match in front of these newbie RAs who were scared to get near us in case we might kill them. ;)

One of my fellow RAs had to role play the resident using pot, and to help make it more authentic she burned some oregano. Thus causing the ResLife administrator to walk down the hall, sniff, and then inquire into whether or not we were possibly being a bit too authentic with our exercises.

And the thing with Paul Hamm last night rocked. I knew the outcome, but even then I thought it was riveting to watch. It was fun listening to the commentators say "Oh he's lost all chances for a medal now" and go "Heh heh heh, little do you know."
