Oh, never mind, I see it. So Obama either goes back to DC and misses a chance to debate McCain, or he stays and risks being painted as unstatesmanlike. That sucks.

Dave Letterman's take on it is the best, and I was like "RIGHT ON" to Obama's response to this crap.

I personally think McCain is just too chickenshit to debate foreign policy right now. This whole thing reads as a ploy to delay the debates.

He might be able to get a week of delay, two at the most. If he is ducking, this won't do him much good.

Actually, his reasoning is that it will do him good-- that it will renew his "hero" vibe and make him APPEAR as though he puts country ahead of self/his own campaign while ALSO giving him more time to prepare his talking points on his weak spot: foreign policy. Because lawd knows, most of our country votes on perceived character and not, you know, THE ISSUES AT HAND.

But the campaign will put spin on it to the point that they'll paint Obama as not wanting to put the country first because he still wants to hold the debate. Wait and see.

The economy *is* at a critical point right now. A debate would show the flaws and benefits of the next person to sit in the Oval Office. The citizenry *needs* to see who would best be able to handle this crisis. Hell, they could just do one of those 'televised' things with a screen or something. Hold the debate in a split screen format to keep it fair.

As for voters? Umm... I've got three cow-orkers who are going to vote for McCain solely because his running mate is a female. Not because they believe in her policies and 'experience' (which they have loudly stated the non-knowledge) but because she has a vagina. No offense to your gender but that simply isn't enough of a reason to put someone into the second most (and if McCain drops, the most) powerful position in this country. I want someone in there that is going to help this country get back on its feet or, at the very least, not screw it up even more than it already is.

The average American votes for who puts on the best show, who smacks down their opponent the best ('Don't mess with Texas!', etc) and who puts the best spin on the issues at hand. They don't want to think - they just want someone who look good in the soundbites.

I am truly afraid of what my countrymen have become.

Totally with you on all the points above.

Also... yeah. My thoughts on Sarah Palin border on the "HULK SMASH" vein.

Dude. If McCain wins, Jason and I have seriously discussed becoming expatriates in the next four years.

Sadly, I think that enough people aren't paying attention to the important things and the election is going to be very close in November.

Ha! That's *exactly* what I thought the second I heard about it. Looks like someone is scared to debate.

I was just happy to see all the polls from today showing way more of a lead for Obama than the margin of error (3%) could possibly account for. Hell the only thing McCain is winning on is I think the ability to react in an emergency (what kind of a category is that?) and he was only winning by 1%, with the margin of error still being 3%.

I second your call of shenanigans!

One of the main things that amazed me about McCain is how he seems to appear non-Presidential no matter what he does. He acts like he is running from place to place in the hope that one of them will be the right answer for what is going on.

I don't think McCain is afraid to debate Obama.

I DO think this is a ploy to boost his economy poll numbers, and to "prove" his leadership. All its proving is that he runs from one attention-grabbing issue to another, like a cat that has multiple toys to play with.

Though, if I were Obama, I would pull all the uber-negative ads off the air. Whether its a ploy or real, McCain has pulled all his ads. It would just LOOK unfair if Obama ran naegative ads. Just keep the positive ones.

I can't wait to see what the polls look like after this.

I really, really disagree with you on that first point.

That's cool.

Either way, Obama seems to be threading the needle in this trap McCain has set. He's still able to campaign, and is also involved in the bailout talks in Washington. Looks like he can handle more than one thing at a time, with cool, calm, leadership.

And McCain just called for the VP debates to be delayed. Oi.

Heh. Did you hear Letterman last night?

Instead of suspending a campaign, Letterman said, a presidential candidate should go to Washington to deal with a crisis and let his running mate shoulder the burdens of politicking. "That’s what you do. You don’t quit. ... Or is that really a good thing to do?” Letterman said, a reference to McCain’s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. “What’s the problem? Where is she? Why isn’t she doing that?” he asked.

Letterman's replacement guest for McCain was Keith Olbermann.

or as chris matthews put it, "razzle dazzle."

he did it with russia. ("we're all georgians!")

he did it with palin.

he's doing it again now.

it's all he's got.

"maverick" = erratic unpredictability and razzle dazzle plays meant to look shiny and distract from the real issues at hand.

good news is, i really don't think the people will fall for it this time. most importantly because now, no matter how heroic mccain looks, no matter how much they're feeling palin's tough hockey mom charm, their money is at stake. and you don't mess with a republican's money. having stability there is paramount. possibly even more important than party loyalty. possibly.

With each passing day I become more and more convinced that we are viewing a three-ring circus starring McCain, Palin, and Bush in the background. It's like some kind of bad joke.

Ugh.
