Date: 2008-09-25 02:41 am (UTC)I personally think McCain is just too chickenshit to debate foreign policy right now. This whole thing reads as a ploy to delay the debates.

Date: 2008-09-25 01:46 pm (UTC)The economy *is* at a critical point right now. A debate would show the flaws and benefits of the next person to sit in the Oval Office. The citizenry *needs* to see who would best be able to handle this crisis. Hell, they could just do one of those 'televised' things with a screen or something. Hold the debate in a split screen format to keep it fair.
As for voters? Umm... I've got three cow-orkers who are going to vote for McCain solely because his running mate is a female. Not because they believe in her policies and 'experience' (which they have loudly stated the non-knowledge) but because she has a vagina. No offense to your gender but that simply isn't enough of a reason to put someone into the second most (and if McCain drops, the most) powerful position in this country. I want someone in there that is going to help this country get back on its feet or, at the very least, not screw it up even more than it already is.
The average American votes for who puts on the best show, who smacks down their opponent the best ('Don't mess with Texas!', etc) and who puts the best spin on the issues at hand. They don't want to think - they just want someone who look good in the soundbites.
I am truly afraid of what my countrymen have become.

Totally with you on all the points above.
Also... yeah. My thoughts on Sarah Palin border on the "HULK SMASH" vein.
Dude. If McCain wins, Jason and I have seriously discussed becoming expatriates in the next four years.

Date: 2008-09-25 01:47 pm (UTC)I DO think this is a ploy to boost his economy poll numbers, and to "prove" his leadership. All its proving is that he runs from one attention-grabbing issue to another, like a cat that has multiple toys to play with.
Though, if I were Obama, I would pull all the uber-negative ads off the air. Whether its a ploy or real, McCain has pulled all his ads. It would just LOOK unfair if Obama ran naegative ads. Just keep the positive ones.
I can't wait to see what the polls look like after this.

Date: 2008-09-25 02:05 pm (UTC)Either way, Obama seems to be threading the needle in this trap McCain has set. He's still able to campaign, and is also involved in the bailout talks in Washington. Looks like he can handle more than one thing at a time, with cool, calm, leadership.
And McCain just called for the VP debates to be delayed. Oi.

Date: 2008-09-25 02:11 pm (UTC)Instead of suspending a campaign, Letterman said, a presidential candidate should go to Washington to deal with a crisis and let his running mate shoulder the burdens of politicking. "That’s what you do. You don’t quit. ... Or is that really a good thing to do?” Letterman said, a reference to McCain’s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. “What’s the problem? Where is she? Why isn’t she doing that?” he asked.
Letterman's replacement guest for McCain was Keith Olbermann.

Date: 2008-09-25 02:21 pm (UTC)he did it with russia. ("we're all georgians!")
he did it with palin.
he's doing it again now.
it's all he's got.
"maverick" = erratic unpredictability and razzle dazzle plays meant to look shiny and distract from the real issues at hand.
good news is, i really don't think the people will fall for it this time. most importantly because now, no matter how heroic mccain looks, no matter how much they're feeling palin's tough hockey mom charm, their money is at stake. and you don't mess with a republican's money. having stability there is paramount. possibly even more important than party loyalty. possibly.
