In other news, I just got back from Spoutwood. Three days of intense vending work, dancing in the rain with Transcendence, being damp and cold, and hanging out with Charles Vess, Twig the Faery, and the Faerie Mag crew.

As for the festival itself, I was so busy, I didn't see too much of it this year. The weather was damp and cold, so I was swathed in many layers of wool by the end of it. I danced Transcendence's sets barefoot, midriff out, on two days where my breath fogged. I was very grateful to not have camped for the weekend, and for the small mercies of a hot shower and a warm bed at the end of the day. This year's roommate was Lisa/Trinket, and it was good fun getting to know her better.

As for purchases, I kept them spare, because mama is on a financial planning budget. I got a small rune pendant and two growlers of ginger beer.

Favorite food addition: hands down the grilled cheese place. They had one called the Mad Dash that was AMAZING. Cheese + ham + apple butter + mustard. It doesn't sound like it'd work, but it worked SO WELL. I also got my annual Busy Bee glittery cupcake.

This was definitely a year that it felt more like work than fun for me, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I made money. That's good. I strengthened friendships and business contacts. I tried to handle frustrations gracefully, with varying degrees of success, but that's a post for another day.

Overall, it was what it was, and it wasn't bad. Just-- some what dampened.

This week going forward is custom orders & getting unsold talismans on the site. And then making more!

Hocus Pocus! Sunday was the annual Hocus Pocus party! Second movie this year was Cabin In The Woods. Unfortunately, Jason got last-minute slammed with work, so he missed the party entirely. Down one host, I feel like I didn't really get the chance to enjoy my guests' company. And then there's the fact that I've been eating sweets and baked goods sparingly-- I tried a little bit of everything, and while everything was damn tasty, this did not play well with my stomach. By the end of the party, I was quite ill. I am still not feeling very well, and am partaking of the flannel pjs and the tea. Which isn't at all to say the party was not a success-- we had twice the amount of guests that we've ever had previously. So that's good! But next year, I'm going to rearrange things for better seating and also not sabotage my intestinal tract. I want to do another post with all of our Halloween decorations (we take Halloween seriously in my house!), but until then, this is my annual batch of Halloween cupcakes. I dyed the cake purple, and made frosting in blue, green, and purple!

The Annual Batch of Halloween Cupcakes

Blogging Elsewhere: I have been reasonably keeping up my makeup blog. I still have 2 more recaps to do on The Quest. They started doubling up on episodes halfway through, and I didn't have the chance to keep up with my busy season started. I mostly blow off steam on Tumblr.

Labradorite! I photographed all of my available labradorite (and a piece of moonstone). These are available for commissions, otherwise they will be turned into things for the Winter update.

It's been a while since I've done a substantive life-update in long-form. As more and more people move from LJ, it's been harder to keep in the habit of writing. In short, things are pretty good.

Work: It's the busy season. I've been working up a storm. The Halloween update just went live last Friday, which is terrible timing (nobody checks the Friday before a holiday weekend), so I'm going to try to do more promo this weekend.

Cobwebs 2014

I need to get with the Faerie Magazine People and ask about their next order so I can plan out my timeline for Holiday stuff. Speaking of, I am IN the Autumn Faerie Magazine-- or at least some of my moss jewelry is. Woot.

NC: Annual trip to the Outer Banks came and went. It's always so nicely quiet down there in late Sept/ early Oct. Unfortunately, it always falls during my busiest season. I worked through most of the days Jason was on the beach. The bright side to this is that my temporary office space was in the crow's nest of the beach house, and the views were spectacular. It had a reclining chair, so I ate breakfast and read a book and listened to the ocean in the morning.

There were lots of delicious seafoods eaten, girlie nail-painting time with my sister in law, and hanging out on the beach at night.

Cats: Nox had a major checkup on Saturday. He's gained weight, although not as much as we thought he did (he may be trading muscle for fat, idk), and his ultrasound came back good. Waiting for the results of his blood panel over the long weekend was torture. Monday was lost in anxiety attacks. Abby came over to watch movies with me so I wouldn't be alone and at the sole mercy of the brain weasels.

The doc called mercifully early this morning-- white blood cell counts were slightly low (an expected results of his steroid use) and his platelets were also low (an expected result of his chemo pill). The vet assured me that this is "part of the process" and not a cause for panic. We're taking him off the chemo pill for three weeks, and then will re-do the bloodwork. I have been doing... ok with this. I keep reminding myself that our vet is an excellent vet and has always been very honest with us about everything. If he says it's normal/expected, then it is. Still, my little dude has cancer, and that never really gets easier for me. The last few days have been hard, and I have felt a little fragile. But he's not manifesting many symptoms of sickness, and he's still pretty happy about all of his favorite things. He's also been extra snuggly as the weather gets cold, and has been all about the hugs and kisses. I love this cat so much.

Faire: I made it to faire twice this season, huzzah. The first was the weekend of my birthday, and I had not been partaking in wine for over a month. Three glasses, and I was quite drunk. Surprised the heck out of me, my lord. So yeah, we tapped out by 4:30 because I was like "nope, I need to go be unconscious, thanks." Diana and I went this past weekend, which was a much better time. The weather was glorious and slightly crisp. We got to watch Casey's Guinness World Record Attempt (and success), we ate things on sticks, and we watched pub sing as darkness descended.

Walking around with Diana, who is incredibly attractive and also having of the fantastically-colored hair, we got a lot of photo requests. Which-- that's always something I've found odd about faire. Not odd bad, but just... odd. I mean, photographers documenting the general faire atmosphere is one thing. But for years, I've had perfect strangers ask to take pictures with me, which is just so strange to me. Why would you want a photo with a perfect stranger? And someone who is not one of the faire's actors/performers? I don't get it. Generally, I say yes, because quite frankly I find it much less bothersome than people who try to photograph me without asking / without my knowledge, but it is still something I don't think I'll ever understand.

As for costuming, for my birthday I splurged on a new corset from Moresca. My first overbust in like six or seven years! I am sad that the gold part is not more yellow (so my initial idea for costuming TOTALLY didn't work), but I raided my dance skirts collection and found two outfits that work quite nicely! Outfits! )

Jason: and I have been doing a ridiculous workout regimen, T25. I am a few days behind because of the update and the day lost to anxiety, but though the scale doesn't seem to be shifting too much, my clothes feel more comfortable. I'm having more of an issue with the restrictive diet in the season of pumpkin flavored everything. Very hard to resist all of the delicious seasonal baked goods.

This weekend is our 5 year wedding anniversary, so we're going to Gettysburg for foliage watching, historical stuff, and a ghost tour.

Hocus Pocus: I am handling this mostly on FB, but in case you are not a FB person (and also someone I know IRL), the Hocus Pocus gathering is going to be Sunday the 26th. Second movie will be Cabin In The Woods.

So, that's it. It's a mixed bag. I'm stressed. I could use more hugs. But there are good things happening, too.

Ever wonder why my default pic is almost always a picture of me? I wrote up an entry on Tumblr about it. But, since Tumblr has its limits as a blogging platform (namely tags & reply functionality), I'll repost here!

Over the years, I’ve had a lot of people misunderstand the reason I use my own face as my main avatar across social media platforms. Some people think it’s simply vanity (and, particularly as we’ve moved into the era of The Selfie, what exactly is so terrible about liking your own face?). But it’s not.

(I’ll preface by saying that I do think there are legit reasons for wanting to be anonymous online. Particularly when it comes to finding/maintaining employment, or those who have had issues with harassment and stalkers. Everyone’s comfort level is different.)

You’ll note that in addition to using my own face as my icon, I also use my own name— on the profile or main page of every single social media platform I use, you can find my name, or the link to a place where my name is readily displayed. If you Google any of my screennames or my business’s name, my real, full name comes up.

That wasn’t always the case, particularly as a minor, for safety reasons… but as an adult, I find it imperative. Because, for me, it’s accountability. I see way too many nameless trolls who feel absolutely fine spreading hate and vitriol, needling and insulting, all behind the mask of anonymity. They feel safest in the shadows. Anything goes, since they will never be held accountable for their words.

My lack of anonymity is a conscious choice for just that reason. I want people to know that there is an individual behind the words. I want them to see my face and realize there is a person behind the keyboard. I want people to know who to contact if they want to discuss something I’ve said. I want to know that anything I say will be on the record— it makes me think before I write a response in moments of conflict. It holds me accountable to my own words.

And that’s why you see my face every time I post.

Change!

I went to faire this weekend! I also drank all the wine. All of it.

See this? This is my drunk face:

Maryland Renaissance Festival

So much wine, in fact, that when one of the Mediaeval Baebes remarked that she had seen me singing along in the crowd (or rather, mouthing the words under my breath-- competing with a performer is just rude), my response was "yes, I am a giant nerd." Awkward, thy name is Christina.

But it was a good day! Jason and I showed [livejournal.com profile] twelvepetals & her wife Jen around, saw the Barely Balanced acrobats (who were absolutely phenomenal), took in [livejournal.com profile] thatliardiego's magic show, caught some Cu Dubh bagpipes & drums, saw the Baebes twice, stood in some hellacious lines, and ate lots of things. My purchase of the day was a 2013 faire mug (which I immediately regretted because of course, 10 mins later I saw a GORGEOUS mug but could no longer justify the purchase) and a hip strap for it. And the new "The Huntress" Baebes double album, which features some of the most complex harmonies they've ever done. I am pretty impressed with it, and so far my favorite tracks are "She Moved Through The Fayre" and "Clasp Of A Lion / Phantom" with a special appreciation for the difficulty involved to sing "Dianae."

The last Baebes show also featured a little girl in the crowd who took the platitude to heart and truly danced like no one was watching. My god, my ovaries.

For the final Cu Dubh / Wolgemut show at the Boar's Head, the bands were encouraging dancers to dance, so [livejournal.com profile] lapinetrose & I threw down some ATS and people lost their minds. It's always cool to see faces when they realize that no, it's actually improv. And it's fun! Side note: I only saw one of the dancers Cu Dubh brought with them (Elizabeth) perform, and she was lovely. She also helped to confirm my suspicion that if you have an actual professional on the stage, the number of those attention-starved and under-clad ladies who watched a Shakira video and now think they're actual bellydancers decreases by an appreciable amount.

I did end up making the costuming work. The red and purple together was a little odd, but I think worked really well in person, and as a bonus, the velvet kept me sufficiently warm. I would still like to get a violet Ghawazee coat next year, though.

Clickee for two more pictures. )

Now, to get my tush back to work. I had completely forgotten that I'm filling in more days than usual at Terra Firma this week, so I have fewer days than projected to finish up the update!

It's raining. Not even good, cleansing rain. Or a thunderstorm. It's humid, sticky rain.

My water is turned off for "routine maintenance" until noon. I have neither showered nor had coffee. My dryer finally got fixed yesterday (it was actually the ducts, not the dryer), and so I have a literal mountain of household things to wash that have piled up over two weeks. But I cannot wash them 'til noon. I am grumpier than GrumpyCat.

Still, dancing happened this past weekend. The Dance Your Heart Out Hafla was on the smallish side, but the stage was very nice. Flissy and I did Natacha Atlas's gorgeous cover of "It's A Man's World" followed by a turbo-fast Raquy drum solo. Then we had to run to our second show with Transcendence completely on the other side of Baltimore, at Stadium Playground. It was a very warm, receptive crowd. However: hardest to dance on surface I've ever been on. It's that recycled tire stuff that they use so kids don't hurt themselves when they fall down. Its whole purpose is to absorb shock. Guess what that does to shimmies? You feel like you're shimmying in quicksand. It was mildly hilarious when we circled up and a brief look of "oh shit" passed our faces. Also given the 97 degree heat and humidity, I felt a bit like a wilted flower after that set, but the audience really loved it.

Also, there's this.

Before the gig: Stadium Playground

We never did get a chance to get a picture of all of Transcendence on the swings, but at least J got one of me throwing up the horns and scream-swinging.

Today, I have some drugstore lovelies to share with you. Some I've had for awhile (the balm stains and lip butters), and some are newer.

When talking about makeup, I generally think that there are items where you should ONLY go high-end (eyeshadow!), and then items where there's not much difference between the high-end brands and their drugstore brethren. Mascara usually falls into this category (Maybelline makes some of the best mascara on the market, perfectly comparable to Diorshow, imo).

If you'd have asked me a few months ago, I would have scoffed at the idea that there'd be a cream eyeshadow that would hold up to high-end versions. MAC's Paint Pots have been generally well-regarded since their release, and Benefit's have also gotten high marks. Then came Maybelline. They accomplished two pretty remarkable feats with their release of their 24 Hour Tattoo by Eyestudio cream eyeshadow line: one, this stuff is actually pretty damn fantastic for $6, and two, the color range has some colors that you usually only see in some of the riskier high-end lines, like MUFE, Illamasqua, or Urban Decay. Like, there's a FUCHSIA. Fuchsia. Anyhow, when I saw these on 1/2 price sale at Rite Aid, I pounced.

I have long wanted to try the perfumes offered by Roxana Villa of Illuminated Perfume. I absolutely love her aesthetic-- it's so dreamlike, and I love that she offers beeswax-based solid perfumes, and some of the beeswax is from her own apiaries. It's a truly unique product, start to finish.

It was SO hard to whittle down what I wanted to try from her offerings, even though her catalog is nowhere near as extensive as most artisan perfumers' that I follow. In the end, I settled on Vera, Aurora, Page 57, and Vespertina. I ordered through her Etsy shop.

Roxana Illuminated Perfumes

Photographs of the sample pack I received. )

So, as you can see, the packaging is exquisite, even for samples. Which makes sense, as these were not inexpensive samples. They came packaged in a lovely burgundy velvet drawstring bag, and a vellum envelope sealed with wax held individual cards for each of the scents, as well as two about the product themselves. The samples were in little pink plastic pots, with color-coded, bee-stamped wax seals. The whole set is very well coordinated, and had a very luxe, very intentional feel. You really feel like you're getting something special when you open the package (which came within 48 hrs from across the country, I might add!).

But how do they smell?

Reviews! )

Overall, these are lovely little perfumes. They do stay very close to the skin, so if you are the type who likes to wear scents but not bother others who may be sensitive, this could be a good option for you. I also like that the artist has several lockets available for those who would like to wear their solid perfumes. As for me, I like the compact, but it is rather pricy.

When choosing these perfumes, I deliberately did not pick the one I was most drawn to, Aumbre, because I think at this point, most of the perfumes I choose to keep and wear regularly feature strong amber notes. Now that I've tried some of the other offerings, however, I may just have to go back for it. Because I am weak, obviously.

For things that are not smellies-related, I have been working on some custom wings and offerings for a local boutique that is very interested in them.

Working!

This week's theme has been working on botanical and naturally inspired pieces. I've also been purchasing and creating things to liven up my spring photos. I bought a gorgeous vintage brass filigree stand, some old books for props, driftwood, new papers, and I've been constructing a mossy little bower. Jason got me a miniature trellis for Christmas, so I painted it and adorned it with natural things.

A peek at that. )

I basically just have to get a nice white fabric backdrop, and I should be all set.

Also, before it sputtered out, Lord of the Rings candle did this:

YOU SHALL NOT PASS! )

In other news, I am fighting the ick. Valiantly trying not to get the ick that is going around, but I just started sniffling, and I waaaaay overslept this morning. Nooooo.

When I'm not feeling like total crud, I have a few more beauty-related things I want to share. Swatches from a new palette and some new colors of my favorite cream blush. Plus I did avail myself of the Zoya promo code for three free polishes. Sad that Maisie was sold out, but it will either come back in stock, or I can find a similar color elsewhere. But all in due time. My hair is also a muuuuch darker pink/purple mix at the moment. I used SFX Deep Purple on the undersides, and the results were nearing black. We'll see how it looks after a few washes.

And that's all the news that's fit to print. Gonna work today until I can't, then curl up with a book.

Just a bit.

There is a serious crap-ton of nail polish under this cut. )

And there you have it: my monster nail polish collection. However! I can honestly say I have worn EACH of these polishes in some way (alone or layered) in the last year. I work with metal and have to change my polish on average every three days.

Favorite Brands: Essie's cremes. Zoya's shimmers. Nicole by OPI for glitter.

Overrated Brands: I can't say overrated per se, but I find that Butter London's polishes chip quickly on me. I know that's not a common sentiment. But they are very expensive, so I only purchase them when there's truly unique color I want to try.

Favorite Polishes: Ozotic 505, Essie A-List, Essie Eternal Optimist, Essie Go Overboard, Zoya Adina, Zoya Faye, Nicole by OPI Nicole's Nickel

Sihaya Designs is now functionally done until the new year. I'll be mailing out orders as they come in, but my insane MAKE ALL THE THINGS machine has ceased. I want to play with some new pigments later this week. While it's teeeeechnically for work, as an artist, it feels more like play.

I also want to do big silly posts about nailpolish and such. I also want to show you our tree and holiday decorations. Soon, soon. Right now, I'm enjoying being burrowed under a blanket with peppermint hot cocoa and not feeling as though I have anything pressing to do.

So, until I post, here's a picture of my hair, as promised.

So, this year, we booked our B&B a little too late. Usually we stay at the Farnsworth, fount of weirdness and haunted dolphin frescoes. This year we stayed at the Battlefield B&B on Emmitsburg Road, which turned out to be absolutely lovely.

Let me sing its praises:

Praises. )

So, we will be going back. I mean, I like the Farnsworth, but the Battlefield B&B wins when it comes to comforts (unless you're going for the all-out weird, which has its own appeal). Plus, ever since the Farnsworth's walk-in attraction opened, it's just gotten... tackier. I mean, the Mature Tour is a staple of our yearly trip, and we LOVE the Tavern, but... enh. The increasing artificiality does take away some of the charm.

The major theme of the trip was "EAT AND DRINK ALLLLLLL THE THINGS." We hit the Ragged Edge, the Dobbin House Tavern, Sweney's Tavern, the cupcake shop (um, multiple times), and then of course, Jason needed to stop to eat every two hours because he's Jason. We also did some shopping, and picked up some candles and decorations to cozify the house as we get closer to the Holidays. I picked up some bags of Snickerdoodle coffee from Habitat, and bought myself some earrings from Studio 30 because they were put together in a way that I found brilliant. Also spent $50 in their new bead shop. Ooops.

We made friends. Frank & Nikki are an Italian couple from Jersey, and stereotypes in all the best, kindest ways. We hung out a fair bit, did tours together, ate together. I need to email to make sure they weathered Sandy, as they live 1 mile off the ocean, but I wonder if they even have power. They left a day early to get a jump on sandbagging their home.

We also did the audio driving tour on our last day, before the rain came in. I'm fairly familiar with the history of the battle, day by day but I'm glad we did for some of the human interest stories we picked up along the way.

Herein begins the photo dump, a mix of my photos and Jason's. ETA: Flickr is being a pain, so here is the photo album.

As for ghostybusiness, there wasn't a ton this year. The Mature Tour was entertaining, but they have been downplaying Elizabeth's story due to crazy people being threatening to one of the guides. Mike (one of the two guides) did privately tell me that they've been experiencing something else that they haven't decided if they're going to talk about or not, and then took my card. They did ask us to confirm parts of the story they were telling, as we were there for part of it when it happened, and that was neat.

Though there was something really weird on Friday night. The Battlefield B&B does not have staff there at night. We all get a passcode that lets us in and out, but on Friday, there was one staff member still around: the storyteller. At no point did he leave the common room where we were all assembled and go upstairs. One of the stories he told was about Rebecca, a little ghost girl often seen around the property. When we went upstairs afterwards, I heard Nikki chattering excitedly, so Jason & I peeked our heads out. On their window, on the inside pane, on the second floor, was a child's handprint. A seriously tiny handprint.

The next morning, Nikki asked the innkeper when the last time was that a child stayed in their room. It had been several weeks, by the inn ledger. She asked when the last time her windows were cleaned, noting that she hadn't seen the handprint earlier in the week. She was told that they're cleaned after the last guest checks out, and at least every week.

So. Creepy.

Anywho, it was a good trip.

Before I go, check out my cute Halloween hat, from WitchesNStitches!

Faire: Went to faire the day before we left for NC. I was still feeling very ill from the week before, dehydrated and lightheaded and overall just lacking in energy. A benefit of this is that I needed to stop and rest much more than I usually do, so I saw more shows. I took in [livejournal.com profile] thatliardiego's 4pm show at the Boar's Head, the Barely Balanced acrobats, Squire on the Wire, the Rogues, Cu Dubh, and bits and pieces of lots of others. One glass of wine was too much for me and made me want to yak. I had to pass over many of the tasty fried stuffs in favor of bland fare like pretzels. While I wanted to be there, I also wanted to be home, in bed, asleep. Also, dancing three songs with Amy & Brooke at the end of the day was a spectacularly bad idea and I should have known better. Ah well, we are very tentatively going to go the Saturday of the last weekend. I would like to, but with NC just past and Gettysburg ahead, finances are tight. We'll see.

Outer Banks:

The vacation that wasn't. )

The Update: I finally got the Halloween update up in the wee hours of Thursday night/ Friday morning. I was working on a serious sleep deficit. For one, about a quarter of my written copy was destroyed in a file issue. For two, it was a lot of work, and I was going to bed around 4am, only to be awoken at 7:45am by hammering upstairs. (Which is still going on today... the upstairs neighbors with the toddlers moved out. They left us Godiva chocolates to thank us for putting up with toddler noises.) Add to that, I had several rush orders from one of the jewelers I work for. But the update is up, an I am pleased with it. Today will be packing orders and getting them out in a timely manner.

siGHt: Friday night (after having gotten three hours of sleep the night before and working an extra shift at Terra Firma), I powered through and went with Jason to see siGHt, Deviated Theatre's 50 minute ghost story "dance opera." To be honest, I didn't know what to expect. They started off with three "rising artist" pre-show openers. A gorgeous silks aerialist whose muscles had muscles doing a dramatic narrative piece, a younger group of girls doing modern dance to "Sail," and a phenomenal group of child tap dancers.

As for siGHt, it was absolutely breathtaking. There's not a lot I can say without spoiling it other than it was creepy, sad, beautiful, and cathartic. The spirits were so unbelievably spooky-- somewhat influenced by Asian ghosts, I thought-- long hair covering the face, ethereal white nightgowns-- and the way they moved, grasping desperately and jerkily, combined with their frenzied whispering and breathwork was a skin-crawling effect. But the dancing was so synchronized and well-executed that it was beautiful, too. There was also an absolutely wonderful child dancer who was on stage for almost the entire 50 minutes. As for the other two characters, I can't particularly say much without giving it away, but they were wonderful, too. If the show ever runs again (this was its second run), I would love to see it again.

Hocus Pocus: Yesterday, I hosted a few friends for an annual viewing of Hocus Pocus. J & I went out and got lots of fun seasonal touches from Target and Pier One, plus new curtains and a rug, while we were at it. The apartment now feels super cozy. We ended up watching Hocus Pocus, The Woman In Black, and then The Decoy Bride, a charming Kelly MacDonald / David Tennant romcom, to wash out the spooky. It was good to see friendly faces and overdose on gourmet cheese and snacks.

I also used up my one-day store of Martha Stewartness and made cupcakes:

Kittens: Olive has been an angel since we've been back from NC. She was ALL OVER Anna & Amy yesterday at the party. Mim ate way too much kibble and is now on a diet. Nox is worrying us a bit because he just hasn't really been interested in eating. Rather, he eats pickily and is constantly looking over his shoulder while he does. He's had to be coaxed the last few mealtimes, and Jason spent this morning hand-feeding him chicken. He's not running a fever, no vomiting, no litterbox issues. He seems a little bit more sleepy than usual, but not worryingly so. We're gonna keep an eye on him, and if he continues not to have much of an appetite, it's to the vet with him.

As for me, I want to sleep more today. I have 2 more pearl stringing assignments to complete, and a bajillion orders to pack. But I think I need a nap first.
